EMCC’s Tye Metcalf tabbed MACJC Player of the Week after Lady Lions’ title run
Rewarded for her three solid, all-around performances that helped propel host East Mississippi Community College to last week’s MACJC Tournament championship, sophomore guard Tye Metcalf has earned MACJC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors.
SCOOBA – Rewarded for her three solid, all-around performances that helped propel host East Mississippi Community College to last week's MACJC Tournament championship, sophomore guard Tye Metcalf has earned MACJC Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors.
Metcalf averaged a team-best 18.7 points along with 6.3 rebounds and 5.0 assists during EMCC's three-game tourney run that produced the Lady Lions' first MACJC basketball championship since the 1983-84 season. She also collectively shot 48 percent (20-42 FGs) from the field overall, 36 percent (5-14 treys) from beyond the three-point arc and 85 percent (11-13 FTs) from the free throw line during tournament wins over Mississippi Gulf Coast (53-47), Southwest Mississippi (62-53) and 10th-ranked Jones (87-73 in 2 OT).
Metcalf, a Southaven product, opened last week's MACJC Tournament in Scooba by scoring a team-high 14 points while adding six rebounds and six assists against Gulf Coast. She followed with a team-best 24 points (8-13 FGs, 3-5 treys & 5-5 FTs) to go along with seven boards and three assists versus Southwest. The left-handed backcourt standout then capped the tourney by totaling 18 points (6-15 FGs & 5-6 FTs), six rebounds, six assists and two steals in the Lady Lions' thrilling double-overtime victory over the three-time reigning MACJC champion Jones Lady Bobcats during Thursday's instant classic championship contest.
On the season, Metcalf is EMCC's second-leading scorer (12.9 ppg) and the team's top playmaker with an average of 4.1 assists per game. The two-time, All-MACJC performer is also averaging 3.1 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game for the year in addition to shooting 42 percent from the field, 33 percent from the arc and 70 percent from the line.
Riding a current 19-game winning streak, Coach Sharon Thompson's 24-2 EMCC Lady Lions will begin play Wednesday in this week's NJCAA Region 23 Basketball Tournament being held in Clinton. Top-seeded East Mississippi will take on No. 7 region seed Northwest Mississippi during Wednesday's 3 p.m. opening-round game at A.E. Wood Coliseum on the Mississippi College campus. The EMCC-NWCC winner will advance to the take on Wednesday's Itawamba-Mississippi Gulf Coast winner during Thursday's 5 p.m. semifinals.
