EMCC Lions get key 73-69 hoops road win Saturday at Wallace State-Hanceville; EMCC Lady Lions fall 70-47
The visiting Lions of East Mississippi Community College avenged their lone loss of the current basketball season by claiming a key 73-69 road win over Wallace State-Hanceville Saturday afternoon at Tom Drake Coliseum. The EMCC Lady Lions dropped a 70-47 decision to the host team in the women's contest.
HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The visiting Lions of East Mississippi Community College avenged their lone loss of the current basketball season by claiming a key 73-69 road win over Wallace State-Hanceville Saturday afternoon at Tom Drake Coliseum. The EMCC Lady Lions dropped a 70-47 decision to the host team in the women's contest.
Having fallen to visiting Wallace State-Hanceville, 78-71, two weeks ago in Scooba, head coach Mark White's EMCC Lions battled back from a 10-point, second-half deficit to earn the four-point win in Saturday's rematch. The visitors held a nine-point lead in the first half and owned a 39-34 halftime advantage.
After losing the lead following the intermission and going down by double digits (58-48) midway through the second half, EMCC found a way to regroup and earn the team's fourth victory in five decisions this season.
Recent University of Memphis signee Avery Woodson paced all scorers with a season-high 33 points for the 4-1 EMCC Lions. The former Wayne County High School standout nailed six 3-pointers and was 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. Sophomore guard Jacolby Mobley, a recent Chattanooga signee, followed with 11 points for the winners.
In the women's contest, head coach Sharon Thompson's EMCC Lady Lions were without the services of post players Kyra Gulledge and Savannah Kimmons. Home-standing Wallace State-Hanceville added to its 27-22 halftime lead en route to avenging the team's 67-59 setback to EMCC last month in Scooba with Saturday's 23-point triumph.
On the heels of her career-high, 22-point effort in Thursday's 60-49 MACJC North Division home win over Holmes, sophomore guard Takera Mitchell, a Wayne County product, tallied a team-high 16 points against Wallace State-Hanceville. Charmane Tims added 14 points for the 5-3 EMCC Lady Lions.
The EMCC men return home to play host to Baton Rouge Community College in a 6 p.m. contest Tuesday (Dec. 10) at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus. The Lady Lions will entertain Jones County Junior College in a 5 p.m. women's game Friday (Dec. 13) at EMCC's Currie Coliseum.
