MONTICELLO, Ark. — The East Mississippi Community College rodeo teams posted season-best finishes in both men's and women's team competition this past weekend at the Weevil Stampede/UAM Collegiate Rodeo. Hosted by the University of Arkansas at Monticello, the three-day NIRA Ozark Region event concluded Saturday at the UAM Truck Driving Academy.
The Lions placed sixth with 140 team points in men's action, while the EMCC women finished just 40 points behind team runner-up Southern Arkansas University with a fifth-place total of 150 points.
The majority of the Lions' team points in the men's competition came in steer wrestling where Carson Powell (Benton, AR) and Dylan Delmas (Athens, AL) placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Powell won the opening round of the event with a 4.8-second clocking en route to scoring 70 total points over two runs. Delmas followed close behind with 60 total points during the two rounds.
EMCC's Tyler Brooks (South Fulton, TN), who paired with Southern Arkansas' Drew Dollar in the team roping competition, secured the other 10 men's team points for the Lions.
Marking their first team points scored of the young 2024-25 rodeo season, the EMCC women tallied their 150 points in the team roping and breakaway roping events. Ryleigh Parker (Hayesville, NC) paired with Gavin Williams (Macon, MS) of the EMCC men's team to place third overall as one of only three team-roping tandems to score in both rounds of competition.
Additionally for the EMCC women, Jancey Harris (Mena, AR) placed fifth in breakaway roping with 70 total points after posting a first-place time of 2.6 seconds in the opening round of the event.
EMCC's Colton Mewbourn (Mathiston, MS) also made it back to Saturday's championship round of team roping with Three Rivers College's Preston Fox, but the pairing did not score.
With a winning total of 655 team points, Northwest Mississippi Community College edged out both the University of West Alabama (635) and Missouri Valley College (630) to claim the men's team title at Arkansas-Monticello this past weekend. The UWA women totaled 500 team points to outdistance the field by 310 points.
