EMCC cheerleading team brings home several awards from UCA college spirit camp held in Knoxville
The East Mississippi Community College cheerleading team enjoyed a productive three days of competition last weekend at the Universal Cheerleaders Association's (UCA) college spirit camp at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
SCOOBA – The East Mississippi Community College cheerleading team enjoyed a productive three days of competition last weekend at the Universal Cheerleaders Association's (UCA) college spirit camp at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
The 19-member EMCC cheerleading squad, guided by first-year head cheerleading coach Amy Harris, brought home several awards and ribbons for their collective cheer efforts over the July 26-28 weekend. Highlighted by a second-place showing in the sideline competition and third place in the fight song category, East Mississippi also earned fifth-place honors in both the overall game day and cheer competitions.
"This young team has worked so hard these past few weeks before and during the UCA camp, so I could not be more proud of all of them," Harris noted. "This was their first time competing and performing as a team in front of a crowd, and they did an awesome job. We have so much to look forward to this year because this team has formed such a special bond with each other."
As a group, the EMCC cheer team also received most improved recognition for the entire camp, which was comprised of 20 cheer squads from across the country, including several university-level teams. Along with collecting a game day planning award, the EMCC contingent garnered all blue ribbons in the group's cheer, sideline and fight song evaluations as well as picking up a gold superior ribbon for spirit.
Individually, EMCC's Leo the Lion earned the up-and-coming mascot trophy along with reeling in two blue ribbons and a red ribbon.
The 2013-14 East Mississippi Community College cheerleading team includes: Kayla Barnett, Olivia Carpenter, James Chavez, Rachel Clay, Morgan Corder (captain), Alexia Ford, Hunter Griffin, Dylan Huling, Demarkus Johnson, Dees Kennedy, Kailey Lavender, Nic Moore, Dawana Morgan, Gardarius Oliver, Hannah Rainer, Payton Rogers, Rachel Salvaggio, Dante' Sanders, and Kate Timmons (captain).
