JACKSON – East Mississippi Community College's Landon Scruggs made the most of his first collegiate start by being named MACCC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for his two-hit, complete-game performance during the Lions' 3-1 nightcap home win over fourth-ranked and reigning national champion Pearl River this past Saturday in Scooba. The announcement was made Tuesday by the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference office headquartered in Jackson.
A 6-foot-3, freshman right-hander, Scruggs capped a productive week on the mound by striking out 11 Wildcats over seven innings. The Olive Branch native retired the last nine batters he faced en route to improving his record to 4-0 on the year and helping the Lions earn a key doubleheader split with Pearl River. The only hits he allowed in the contest were back-to-back singles in the third inning when PRCC scored its lone run on an RBI bunt single by Alex Perry.
Earlier in the week on Tuesday (April 4) against Northeast Mississippi, Scruggs pitched 5.1 innings of middle relief, striking out eight, during EMCC's first game against the Tigers.
For the week, the Center Hill High School product fanned 19 total batters in 12.1 combined innings of work versus Northeast and Pearl River.
On the season, Scruggs has a team-high 42 strikeouts in 36 total innings over 11 mound appearances, while opponents are only hitting a collective .221 against him.
Head coach Brett Kimbrel's EMCC Lions (19-19, 7-11 MACCC) will travel to Fulton to take on Itawamba in a Wednesday (April 12) twin bill before returning home to play host to Southwest Mississippi in a Saturday (April 15) doubleheader in Scooba. First pitch for Saturday's EMCC-SMCC baseball series is slated for 1 p.m. at Gerald Poole Field.
