SCOOBA — East Mississippi Community College freshman Blayze Berry has been named the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) Baseball Pitcher of the Week for his efforts in helping lead the Lions to last Friday's season-opening wins over Itawamba and Northeast Mississippi in Booneville.
A Mississippi State transfer out of Columbus' Heritage Academy, Berry picked up the win in relief and went 3-for-4 at the plate in his collegiate debut to pace EMCC to a 9-3 nine-inning victory over the ICC Indians. On the mound, he threw 3.1 scoreless innings with six strikeouts while allowing no walks and only one hit. The freshman right-hander retired the last 10 batters of the game, while 30 of his 41 pitches thrown were for strikes.
At the plate against ICC, Berry hit the go-ahead, two-run homer in the top of the ninth and then went back to the mound to complete his 3.1 scoreless innings of relief work. He was also error-free in the field in eight chances from second base and turned a double play.
Berry added a single and a walk in four plate appearances during EMCC's 3-2 nightcap win over home-standing Northeast Mississippi.
Coach Brett Kimbrel's 2-0 EMCC Lions will travel to Senatobia to take on Northwest Mississippi in a Wednesday doubleheader set for a 2 p.m. first pitch at Jim Miles Field. Live-stream action is set to be available at nwccrangers.com/watch.
