Host EMCC Lions place fourth in spring MACJC golf opener at Lion Hills in Columbus
The host Lions of East Mississippi Community College maintained their fourth-place team finish in the MACJC's spring golf opener played this past weekend at Lion Hills in Columbus.
COLUMBUS – The host Lions of East Mississippi Community College maintained their fourth-place team finish in the MACJC's spring golf opener played this past weekend at Lion Hills in Columbus.
On the heels of Saturday's opening-round 314, EMCC followed with a 312 Sunday to stay in fourth place and finish the two-day tournament at 626. Mississippi Gulf Coast (303-287—590) overtook first-day team leader Copiah-Lincoln (299-293—592) with a second-round 287 to win the tournament by two strokes over the Wolfpack. Meridian placed third with a 596 (307-289).
Gulf Coast's Grant Motter (73-68—141) earned individual medalist honors with a two-stroke victory over Meridian's Lance Strickland (74-69—143). Co-Lin's Philip Heine finished third with an even-par 144 (75-69).
Sophomore Daniel Schroeder, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, paced EMCC's quintet by finishing in a seven-way tie for eighth place after carding rounds of 74 and 77. Michael McGill, a product of Biloxi's St. Patrick Catholic High School, led the Lion freshmen with a two-day score of 155, including a second-round 74, to finish tied for 23rd.
Trae Reeves (Vancleave) and Kent Vaughn (Ackerman) tied for 27th (77-83—160) and 29th (82-79—161), respectively, for EMCC, while Baldwyn's Cason Collins rounded out the Lions' scorecard tying for 38th place with a two-round total of 169 (87-82).
Coach Benji Williams' EMCC Lions will compete in Thursday's Honesty Pays Invitational at Jackson's Patrick Farms, before resuming MACJC tournament action, April 11-12, at Briarwood in Meridian.
