SCOOBA – For the league-high third time this season, East Mississippi Community College freshman Quantesha Patterson has been named the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) Women's Basketball Player of the Week for her collective two-game efforts a week ago.
For the week, Patterson averaged 24.5 points and 12.5 rebounds, while shooting 67 percent (20-30 FGs) from the field and 60 percent (9-15 FTs) from the line, to become the MACJC's first three-time POTW recipient (men or women) this season. A member of East Webster High School's Class 2A state championship team a year ago as a prep senior, Patterson previously claimed the MACJC's weekly honor during the first and third weeks of the current campaign.
A week ago, Patterson pumped in a career-high 34 points on 15-of-20 shooting while adding 13 rebounds, two blocks, two steals and an assist in EMCC's 76-74 win at Northwest Mississippi on Monday. Last Thursday in Booneville, the Maben native followed with 15 points and 12 boards in the Lady Lions' 94-91 double-overtime loss at Northeast Mississippi.
Most recently, Patterson opened the current week by recording her 10th double-double in 16 games played this season with 16 points and 15 rebounds during EMCC's hard-fought 77-63 home setback to fifth-ranked Shelton State Monday night in Scooba.
On the year, Patterson is currently tied for sixth among the NJCAA's Division I scoring leaders with an average of 21.3 points per game, including four 30-point efforts. Along with standing third nationally in field-goal percentage (65.7%), the 5-foot-11 freshman also averages 10.5 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 1.4 blocks an outing for the season.
Patterson, along with this week's MACJC men's honoree Darrlyn Willis of Pearl River, are now both nominated for national honors by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
Coach Sharon Thompson's division-leading EMCC Lady Lions (12-4, 6-1), along with Coach Billy Begley's EMCC Lions (14-4, 3-4), will return to MACJC North Division action Thursday evening by playing host to the Trojans of Mississippi Delta Community College. A 5:30 p.m. women's game will be followed by a 7:30 p.m. men's contest at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus.
