SCOOBA – East Mississippi Community College freshman forward Quantesha Patterson has been tabbed the season's first MACJC Women's Basketball Player of the Week to tip off her promising collegiate career.
The 5-foot-11 Patterson averaged 26.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 2.5 blocks last week, while shooting 69 percent (22-of-32 FGs) from the field, during her first two collegiate outings for head coach Sharon Thompson's 2-0 EMCC Lady Lions.
In her collegiate debut on Nov. 2, Patterson totaled 22 points (11-16 FGs), five rebounds, six steals and two blocks to lead the EMCC women to a season-opening 71-33 home victory over Talladega College's junior varsity team. The former Class 2A state champion team member from East Webster High School then exploded for 31 points (23 after halftime) on 11-of-16 shooting for the second straight game during last Thursday's 68-52 road win over rival Meridian Community College. Patterson added 11 rebounds, including five offensive boards, and blocked three MCC shots to register her first collegiate double-double.
Patterson, along with MACJC men's honoree Seth LeDay of Northwest Mississippi, are now both nominated for national honors by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
In early-season meetings between unbeaten rivals, the East Mississippi basketball teams will play host to East Central Community College Thursday evening on the Scooba campus. A pair of 2-0 teams match up in the 5:30 p.m. women's contest, while first-year head coach Billy Begley's 3-0 EMCC Lions take on the 2-0 East Central men in the 7:30 p.m. nightcap at EMCC's Keyes T. Currie Coliseum.
