SCOOBA – The East Mississippi Community College basketball teams will open the 2015 portion of their schedule by taking on a pair of traditional rivals in season rematch doubleheaders during this week's action.
In EMCC's first home doubleheader hoops action since Dec. 2, the Lions and Lady Lions will play host to East Central Community College on Tuesday. A 5:30 p.m. women's game will be followed by a 7:30 p.m. men's contest at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus.
Two days later, East Mississippi will travel to Meridian to meet the Eagles of Meridian Community College in twinbill action. Thursday's 5:30/7:30 p.m. hoops doubleheader will be contested at MCC's Graham Gymnasium.
Both of this week's EMCC basketball doubleheaders against nearby rival foes are slated to be video-streamed live via www.EMCCAthletics.com/live with EMCC Director of Digital Media Matt Pellegrin set to call the play-by-play action.
Coach Mark White's EMCC Lions are 7-2 on the season after splitting a pair of tournament games at last week's Tallahassee Democrat Holiday Classic hosted by Tallahassee Community College. After dropping a tough 88-85 double-overtime decision to Hillsborough (Fla.) Community College last Tuesday in Tallahassee, EMCC bounced back the next day to claim a convincing 85-57 victory over Garrett College (Md.).
The Lions' only other setback on the season came at East Central, 99-88, back on Nov. 13, which marked the Warriors' first basketball victory over the EMCC men since the 2008-09 season. During their second game of the current season (Nov. 6), the Lions posted their 11th consecutive series win over Meridian CC with an 85-76 victory in Scooba.
Idle since winning (48-37) at Delgado Community College back on Dec. 8, head coach Sharon Thompson's EMCC Lady Lions are 5-4 on the campaign with a current three-game winning streak to their credit. The EMCC women also earned December wins over Alabama Southern (62-49) and at Northeast Mississippi (68-64) to begin defense of their MACJC North Division regular-season championship.
This week, EMCC's Lady Lions are looking to avenge their November losses to Meridian (88-63) and East Central (89-61).
