EMCC Lions improve to 9-1 in MACJC softball play with Wednesday’s sweep at Coahoma
The East Mississippi Community College softball team improved to 9-1 in MACJC play with a 16-5, 13-0 road doubleheader sweep over Coahoma Community College Wednesday afternoon at the Eddie C. Smith Sportsplex.
CLARKSDALE – The East Mississippi Community College softball team improved to 9-1 in MACJC play with a 16-5, 13-0 road doubleheader sweep over Coahoma Community College Wednesday afternoon at the Eddie C. Smith Sportsplex.
Winners of 11 of their last 12 games played, the EMCC Lions banged out 18 hits during each victory over Coahoma. In the circle, freshman pitchers AG Stewart and Carly Thompson earned run-rule, complete-game victories for the visitors.
In the opening contest, EMCC exploded for 10 runs on 10 hits while sending 16 batters to the plate in the second inning. The Lions added another run in the fourth and five more in the fifth off Coahoma's Gabrielle Crain.
Coahoma tallied twice in the third and plated three more runs in the fifth off EMCC's Stewart, who evened her record at 3-3 on the year. The Pisgah High School product scattered 10 hits, while striking out five and not issuing a walk, in the complete-game victory.
All but one EMCC starting position player had multi-hit outings in the opener, led by Magnolia Keller's 3-for-4 effort at the plate. The freshman from D'Iberville also went 3-for-4 in the nightcap with two runs batted in. Sophomore middle infielders Kaitlyn Brannon and Averi Pender led the way for the Lions with four and three RBIs, respectively, in the first game.
In the nightcap, EMCC scored multiple runs in four of the game's five innings off CCC's Breianna Trevino. A pair of Lion runs in the first frame were followed by three more in the second, six scores in the fourth and another two tallies in the fifth.
Totaling 18 more hits as a team in the second contest, the Lions were paced by Keller's second three-hit game of the day as well as fellow freshman Jourdan Jones' 3-for-4 effort at the plate.
In the circle for EMCC, reigning MACJC Softball Pitcher of the Week Carly Thompson won her fifth straight decision in recording her first collegiate shutout. The Germantown High School product gave up just five singles, while striking out three and not allowing a walk, to improve to a team-best 5-4 on the year with her fourth complete-game victory.
Coach Kyndall White's 12-13 EMCC Lions are next slated to play a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Meridian Community College on Tuesday (March 28) after cancelling Saturday's scheduled home twin bill against fourth-ranked LSU Eunice due to forecasted rain.
