SCOOBA – East Mississippi Community College freshman Carly Thompson has been named MACJC Softball Pitcher of the Week for her recent efforts in the circle for the Lions.
Thompson went 2-0 and did not give up an earned run in 15 total innings during three pitching appearances a week ago for the EMCC Lions. While scattering six hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks during the week, Thompson recorded a stretch where she retired 23 consecutive batters during her combined wins over Holmes and Copiah-Lincoln.
Thompson opened the week by striking out seven and not allowing a hit in 4.2 innings of relief work during the Lions' 7-4 doubleheader-clinching road win over Holmes. The right-hander came back two days later to throw a complete-game three-hitter at Co-Lin to secure EMCC's third straight twin-bill sweep in MACJC play. After retiring the first nine Co-Lin batters, Thompson surrendered a lone unearned run in the sixth inning of the Lions' 3-1 nightcap victory over the Wolfpack to notch her fourth straight win. She then capped last week by allowing just three hits and fanning three over 3.1 shutout innings of relief duty during Sunday's 3-1 home loss to Southwest Mississippi.
For the season, Thompson owns a team-best 4-4 record with 42 strikeouts in 49.1 innings pitched. The Germantown High School product also leads EMCC's pitching staff with 14 appearances and seven starts in the circle for the Lions.
Thompson along with current MACJC Softball Player of the Week Mamie Hollenhead of Itawamba Community College are now nominated for national awards from the NJCAA.
Owners of a recent nine-game winning streak, Coach Kyndall White's EMCC Lions are 7-1 within the conference and 10-13 overall on the year. They are slated to play Wednesday at Coahoma Community College before playing host to fourth-ranked LSU Eunice in a scheduled 4 p.m. Saturday doubleheader on the Scooba campus.
