SCOOBA – On the heels of their 17-3, 23-0 run-rule home sweep over Coahoma during spring break week, the Lions of East Mississippi Community College continue their current softball home stand by playing host to MACJC foes Meridian and Pearl River on Tuesday and Friday, respectively. First pitch for both conference doubleheaders is set for 2 p.m. at the EMCC Softball Field.
After playing their first 16 games of the season away from the Scooba campus, head coach Kyndall White's EMCC Lions (11-11, 6-4) are 4-2 on their scheduled six-date home stand that began with a sweep over Holmes back on March 8. EMCC's scheduled non-conference home twin-bill against top-ranked LSU Eunice this past Saturday was cancelled due to wet field conditions in Scooba.
Against visiting Coahoma last week, East Mississippi collectively scored multiple runs in all eight at-bats en route to scoring 40 total runs on 32 hits during the doubleheader sweep. With 16 hits as a team in each contest, the Lions exploded for 11 second-inning runs in the first game, highlighted by Emily Patrick's grand slam. An eight-run opening frame in the nightcap paved the way for the shutout victory to complete the sweep over the CCC Lady Tigers.
With several Lion players getting the opportunity to play during the sweep over Coahoma, EMCC freshman Kaitlyn Brannon had a pair of hits in each game while crossing the plate six times and driving home four runs. As the Lions' starting shortstop, the Cullman, Alabama native scored four times and had three RBIs in the nightcap.
In the 17-3 win over Coahoma, Patrick and Brannon were joined by Marissa Landrum and Molly McLeod with multiple hits for the Lions. During the team's 23-0 shutout victory, Brannon, Mallory Vance, Breanna Glass, Kendall Wilkinson, Autumn Gilbert and Treasure Lynch all contributed multi-hit efforts.
In the circle for East Mississippi, starting pitchers Valiree Blair and Ciara Steward limited Coahoma batters to just five total hits with 17 combined strikeouts during last week's doubleheader sweep. Blair picked up her first win of the season by allowing three unearned runs on three hits with eight strikeouts and a walk in the opener. Steward improved to 2-3 on the year by throwing a complete-game, two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and five walks during the five-inning nightcap.
