Watt-Brooks team roping victory leads EMCC men to runner-up rodeo finish in Arkansas
The East Mississippi Community College men’s rodeo team registered its third second-place finish of the 2023-24 season by claiming runner-up team honors at last week’s Weevil Stampede hosted by the University of Arkansas at Monticello. The three-day rodeo concluded Saturday evening at the UAM Diesel Training Academy.
MONTICELLO, Ark. — The East Mississippi Community College men's rodeo team registered its third second-place finish of the 2023-24 season by claiming runner-up team honors at last week's Weevil Stampede hosted by the University of Arkansas at Monticello. The three-day rodeo concluded Saturday evening at the UAM Diesel Training Academy.
Highlighted by EMCC's team roping tandem of Kemper Academy product Matt Watt and Tyler Brooks (South Fulton, TN) winning the event and totaling 340 points between them, the Lions trailed only Missouri Valley College in the men's final standings with 530 team points.
Freshman Dylan Delmas (Athens, AL) collected 120 points for the Lions with a third-place finish in the steer wrestling competition. He also paired with EMCC teammate Waylon Buskirk (Shannon, MS) to tally 40 combined points in team roping.
The Lions' other 30 team points this past weekend were earned by Tanner Brown (Florence, MS) in tie-down roping. Rounding out EMCC's scoring was Roper Stoots (Louisville, MS), who claimed 70 individual points in tie-down roping that included a second-place finish in the first round with a 9.9-second effort.
Though the EMCC women's team did not score in the UAM-hosted event, Leslie Scroggins (Benton, AR) advanced to Saturday's championship round in breakaway roping.
The University of Tennessee at Martin captured the women's team title this past weekend with a narrow 20-point (260-240) victory over Southern Arkansas University.
Head coach Morgan Goodrich's East Mississippi rodeo teams are scheduled to close out regular-season Ozark Region competition at this week's annual Ranger Rodeo, April 25-27, hosted by Northwest Mississippi Community College. The three-day event will take place at the Northwest Multipurpose Arena in Senatobia.
