MAGNOLIA, Ark. — East Mississippi Community College's Carson Powell claimed steer wrestling honors this past weekend at Southern Arkansas University's Annual Intercollegiate Rodeo. The three-day event concluded with Saturday's championship round held at Story Arena.
A native of Benton, Ark., Powell posted winning times of 4.2 and 4.7 seconds to collect 175 first-place points for the Lions. His winning performance in SAU's steer wrestling event helped lead EMCC to a fifth-place finish in the men's team standings with 250 total team points.
The Lions' remaining 75 men's points were divided between Tyler Brooks (South Fulton, TN) and Dylan Delmas (Athens, AL), who scored 50 and 25 team points, respectively, in tie-down roping and steer wrestling.
All total, East Mississippi had seven different competitors advance to Saturday's championship round in four separate events, including reigning College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) participant Tanner Brown (Florence, MS) in tie-down roping. In team roping, Delmas paired with teammate Waylon Buskirk (Shannon, MS), while EMCC's Bronc Rowland (Merced, CA) earned 50 individual points teaming with Pearl River's Kannon Nunnery to finish fifth overall after clocking a 7.9-second effort in the first round.
In women's competition, EMCC's Rennie Chavis (Wagener, SC) made it back to the short-go round of the barrel racing event but did not figure in the final scoring.
In the final team standings, Missouri Valley College claimed the men's title with 610 total team points and the University of West Alabama won the women's competition with 435 points this past weekend. The host SAU Muleriders finished as team runners-up in both the men's and women's standings.
