EMCC rodeo heads to UT Martin after fourth-place men’s finish in Monticello, Ark.
The East Mississippi Community College men’s rodeo team placed fourth during challenging weather conditions this past weekend at the University of Arkansas at Monticello-hosted Weevil Stampede. The three-day event concluded Saturday afternoon amidst cold, rain and mud at the Drew County Fairgrounds.

The three-day event concluded Saturday afternoon amidst cold, rain and mud at the Drew County Fairgrounds.
With nine of their team ropers advancing to Saturday's championship round, the EMCC men scored 270 of their 310 team points in the team roping competition. Reigning College National Finals Rodeo participants Cade and Cooper Cowan finished as runners-up in total points this past weekend by scoring 110 points each after compiling a two-round time of 14.0 seconds. The brother tandem out of Marshall Academy prevailed during the opening round with a winning time of 6.4 seconds.
The Lions' other 50 team points earned in the team roping event were claimed by Tanner Brown (30 pts) and Colton Allen (20 pts), who paired with Koby Sanchez and Wyatt Allen, respectively, to produce points in the first round.
In addition, the EMCC team roping tandem of Scooba product Matt Watt and Tyler Brooks earned 50 individual points each, while Laine Moore paired with Northwest Mississippi's David Holt to also advance to Saturday's championship round.
EMCC's remaining 40 team points were collected by Gavin Lee in the bareback riding competition.
Missouri Valley College edged the University of Tennessee at Martin by 25 points (795-770) to win the men's competition this past weekend in Monticello, Ark. The University of West Alabama earned third-place men's team honors with 660 points, while UWA topped MVC, 405-272, to capture the women's team title on the strength of a 1-2 finish by former EMCC barrel racing standouts and CNFR reserve champions Jaylie and Taycie Matthews.
Head coach Morgan Goodrich's East Mississippi rodeo teams are scheduled to continue Ozark Region competition this week (April 13-15) at the University of Tennessee at Martin.
