POPLARVILLE — Fresh off its first-place tie in EMCC's annual rodeo to open the spring season, the East Mississippi Community College men's team placed fourth in the Pearl River Community College Rodeo held this past weekend at the Pearl River County Fairgrounds. The three-day event concluded with Saturday's championship round.
EMCC cowboys Tanner Brown and Gavin Lee combined to score all of the Lions' 340 team points. Highlighted by a first-place effort of 5.5 seconds in the second round of team roping, Brown paired with teammate Koby Sanchez to earn first-place overall honors in the event after finishing a combined four-tenths of a second faster (12.2) than UT Martin's tandem of Will McCraw and Cole Walker (12.6) over the two rounds of competition. Along with his 130 team points collected in team roping, Brown also added 80 points for his third-place tie in the tie-down roping competition that was won by former EMCC Lion and current West Alabama competitor Clay Livengood.
Gavin Lee picked up EMCC's other 130 team points with his second-place showing in the steer wrestling event following runs of 5.4 and 5.8 seconds. Competing in his hometown, Lee also advanced to the championship round in the bareback riding competition but did not score.
Scooba product Matt Watt earned 45 individual points in the tie-down roping event for East Mississippi.
In addition for EMCC, the team roping brother tandems of Cade and Cooper Cowan along with Colton and Wyatt Allen both made it back to Saturday's finals but neither pairing was able to generate any points.
The EMCC women's team did not place in the final team scoring at the PRCC-hosted event, though breakaway roper Juliana Jennings did advance to Saturday's championship round.
Missouri Valley College claimed both the men's and women's team titles at Pearl River with wins over the University of Tennessee at Martin. MVC bested UT Martin, 850-455 in the men's competition as well as on the women's side, 387.5-215.
Head coach Morgan Goodrich's East Mississippi rodeo teams are scheduled to return to Ozark Region competition, April 6-8, at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
