SCOOBA – The seventh-ranked Lions of East Mississippi Community College will look to get back into the win column during Saturday's Homecoming matchup against visiting Coahoma Community College. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Sullivan-Windham Field on the Scooba campus.
Along with the introduction of EMCC's 2017 Homecoming queen and her court, halftime festivities of the Lions' Homecoming contest against the Coahoma Tigers will also feature the recognition of the school's 2017 Alumnus of the Year recipient (Pat Webb) and Distinguished Service Award winner (Nick Clark). Also to be recognized at halftime will be EMCC's 2017 Sports Hall of Fame induction class comprised of Jose Casanova, Ravon Cumberland, Ruth Johnson Ethridge, Randall Mackey, Jay Miller and Marcus Wood.
For only the 13th time over the past decade, Coach Buddy Stephens' EMCC Lions, 6-1 overall on the year and 4-1 within the MACJC North Division, are looking to bounce back from a loss after dropping a 61-38 road decision to the now-No. 6 Northwest Mississippi Rangers last Thursday in Senatobia. Along with having the team's 28-game, regular-season MACJC North Division winning streak snapped a week ago, EMCC also had halted its 17-game overall win string that had dated back to last season. With a 10-year overall head coaching record of 93-13 for an 87.7 career winning percentage, Stephens is EMCC's all-time leader in career wins as well as owning the NJCAA's all-time highest career winning percentage among head football coaches with 100 or more career games coached.
With a seven-year composite home record of 37-1 since moving into their current Sullivan-Windham Field location prior to the 2011 football season, the EMCC Lions currently own a 27-game home winning streak over the past five seasons. Their lone home setback since 2011 was a last-second 47-46 defeat at the hands of eventual MACJC state champion Copiah-Lincoln during the 2012 state semifinals.
Guided by second-year head football coach Steven Miller, the Coahoma Tigers are 1-6 overall on the season and winless in four attempts within the division. After successfully opening the season with a 35-20 victory at Southwest Mississippi, CCC has since fallen to Copiah-Lincoln (34-6), Jones County (33-16), Holmes (30-20), Northeast Mississippi (27-10), Northwest Mississippi (35-0) and Itawamba (30-14).
EMCC's Stephens is unbeaten in nine previous Homecoming contests for the Lions, including last year's 51-32 victory over then-No. 1 Northwest Mississippi. He also owns a 9-0 career mark versus Coahoma with shutout wins over the Tigers during the past two seasons (42-0 last season in Clarksdale & 69-0 two years ago in Scooba).
Saturday's Homecoming matchup between EMCC and Coahoma will be live-streamed in HD at www.EMCCAthletics.com/live. An alternate audio stream of the radio broadcast will also be available at www.wfca.fm.
