SCOOBA – East Mississippi Community College's Layton Dill has earned MACJC Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors for his 13-strikeout performance against the Coahoma Tigers a week ago in Clarksdale.
Following a slow start during EMCC's first of two come-from-behind road wins last Tuesday, Dill rebounded from Coahoma's three-run first frame to dominate Tiger hitters for the next six innings during the nine-inning opening contest. After giving up the three runs on four singles in the home half of the first inning, the sophomore right-hander settled down and was virtually unhittable from the second inning through the seventh inning when the Lions opted for the bullpen.
In addition to fanning a career-high 13 Coahoma batters, Dill issued just one walk and allowed five total hits over seven innings during EMCC's 5-3 comeback win over the Tigers. Over his final six innings of work, the Madison Central High School product limited Coahoma to just one hit and only four base-runners en route to registering his first win of the season and fifth career EMCC victory.
Dill, along with Jones County freshman third baseman Tanner Huddleston, will now be nominated for national honors by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
Winners of five of their last six games, head coach Chris Rose's East Mississippi Lions enter Tuesday's 4 p.m. road doubleheader against Meridian Community College with a 5-5 MACJC mark and 9-17 overall record. EMCC is slated to make its home baseball season debut Saturday afternoon by playing host to East Central Community College. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Gerald Poole Field on the Scooba campus.
