East Mississippi opens home hoops slate by sweeping East Central with 86-74 women's win and 87-69 men's victory
The East Mississippi Community College basketball teams successfully opened their home schedule by sweeping East Central Community College Thursday night at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum. The Lady Lions began the evening with an 86-74 victory over ECCC, while the preseason 11th-ranked Lions completed the sweep with an 87-69 triumph over the Warriors in the nightcap.

The Lady Lions began the evening with an 86-74 victory over ECCC, while the preseason 11th-ranked Lions completed the sweep with an 87-69 triumph over the Warriors in the nightcap.
In the women's contest, the visiting Lady Warriors erased a 12-point halftime deficit (41-29) to knot the contest at 65-all on a 3-pointer by Tynika Bender with six minutes remaining. The margin stayed within four points for the next three minutes until EMCC scored seven unanswered points to essentially seal the contest.
Coach Sharon Thompson's 3-1 EMCC Lady Lions were led by Chicago native Dana Gettis with a game-high 20 points, followed by Charmane Tims, of Clarkdale High School, with 16 points.
Falling to 3-2 on the season, the Lady Warriors received 19 points from Ty-neisa Mickens, while Bender and Jaleshia Jones followed with 17 and 16 points, respectively.
In the nightcap, the home-standing Lions outscored East Central, 52-35, in the second half to cruise to their second win in as many outings on the young season. Leading just 49-43 with 13:13 remaining in the contest, EMCC broke open the game by scoring 11 unanswered points in the span of only a minute. Devonta Pollard's three-point play at the 12:46 mark was promptly followed by back-to-back 3-pointers from Mack Foster and Avery Woodson to ignite the game-deciding run.
Jacolby Mobley scored 20 of his game-high 26 points in the second half to lead the way for the winners. Pollard, the former McDonald's All-American from Kemper County High School, added 13 points plus a team-best nine rebounds.
Slipping under the .500 mark at 2-3, the Warriors were paced by Michael Matlock's 23 points and eight rebounds.
The EMCC women return to action Monday by playing host to preseason ninth-ranked Shelton State in a 5:30 p.m. contest at EMCC's Currie Coliseum. Both East Mississippi teams will be in home action Thursday (Nov. 21) when Wallace State-Hanceville visits the Scooba campus for a 5:30 p.m. women's game followed by a 7:30 p.m. men's contest.
