EMCC to host Northwest on Monday’s “Sophomore Day” for best-of-three series spot in MACJC softball playoffs
With postseason implications on the line, the East Mississippi Community College softball team will close out the regular season by playing host to Northwest Mississippi Monday afternoon during “Sophomore Day” on the Scooba campus. Originally slated to be played this past week but postponed due to rain, first pitch for Monday’s regular-season finale is set for 3 p.m. at the EMCC Softball Field.

EMCC and Northwest enter the week in a three-way tie for seventh place with Pearl River with identical 12-14 records in MACJC conference play. Two of the three teams will earn the final two spots heading into this weekend's MACJC best-of-three playoff series. The Lions swept PRCC last month in Scooba, while NWCC and Pearl River split their head-to-head doubleheader.
Beginning this year within the 15-member MACJC softball ranks, the top eight teams with the best regular-season conference records will advance to best-of-three playoff series to be hosted by the league's top four schools this Friday and Saturday (April 22-23). Nationally ranked MACJC members Jones County, Mississippi Gulf Coast, Itawamba and East Central, along with Copiah-Lincoln and Southwest Mississippi, have all clinched spots for this weekend's MACJC softball best-of-three playoff series.
Coach Kyndall White's East Mississippi Lions are 17-21 overall after being swept, 11-2 and 10-2, by third-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast Saturday afternoon in Perkinston. EMCC will be looking to snap a six-game losing skid this week after dropping doubleheaders to three straight nationally ranked conference opponents this month (Itawamba, East Central and Gulf Coast).
The dozen EMCC sophomore players set to be recognized during Monday's 2:30 p.m. pre-game "Sophomore Day" activities on the Scooba campus are Amandalyn Abney (Center Hill HS), Heather Abney (Center Hill HS), Valiree Blair (Richland), Chandler Ellis (Vicksburg), Autumn Gilbert (D'Iberville), Breanna Glass (Noxapater), Jordyn Jackson (Hamilton), Marissa Landrum (D'Iberville HS), Zoie LaVergne (Rayne, LA), Molly McLeod (Clarkdale HS), Emily Patrick (Senatobia), and Blake Rigdon (Central Academy).
