EMCC’s Jadi Gibbs wins breakaway roping event at season-opening rodeo in Hattiesburg
Jadi Gibbs won the breakaway roping event to highlight East Mississippi Community College’s season-opening NIRA Ozark Region rodeo competition held at the James Lynn Cartlidge Multi-Purpose Center in Hattiesburg. The three-day event hosted by Pearl River Community College concluded Saturday night.
HATTIESBURG – Jadi Gibbs won the breakaway roping event to highlight East Mississippi Community College's season-opening NIRA Ozark Region rodeo competition held at the James Lynn Cartlidge Multi-Purpose Center in Hattiesburg. The three-day event hosted by Pearl River Community College concluded Saturday night.
Gibbs, a Morton native, posted runs of 2.3 and 3.0 seconds to place second in average and first in scoring with 140 total points. The sophomore out of East Rankin Academy also advanced to Saturday's short go-round in the barrel racing event but did not place in the finals.
The EMCC women received team scoring from freshmen Kayley Kennemer and Abbey Jo Kilgore. Kennemer, the sister of former EMCC standout Kelsey Kennemer, earned 40 points in the goat tying event with runs of 9.1 and 8.2 seconds. The product of West Limestone High School (Anderson, AL) also made it back to Saturday's finals in the team roping competition with freshman Ethan Awa of the EMCC men's team.
Kilgore, from Curry High School (Jasper, AL), collected 20 points in the barrel racing competition after posting times of 15.77 and 15.95 seconds to round out EMCC's ninth-place women's team finish in the season opener.
Coach Morgan Goodrich's EMCC rodeo team continues men's and women's regional competition this week (Sept. 20-22) at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo.
