East Mississippi men’s rodeo team places fifth at UT Martin
The East Mississippi Community College men’s rodeo team placed fifth this past weekend at the 50th Annual Spring College Rodeo hosted by the University of Tennessee at Martin. The three-day event concluded Saturday night at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex. EMCC’s women placed seventh.
MARTIN, Tenn. – The East Mississippi Community College men's rodeo team placed fifth this past weekend at the 50th Annual Spring College Rodeo hosted by the University of Tennessee at Martin. With 290 total team points on the men's side, EMCC finished just behind fourth-place Pearl River CC (345 points) and host UT Martin (365). Nationally fourth-ranked Missouri Valley College's 1,030 points easily outdistanced runner-up Southern Arkansas (445).
In women's competition, Arkansas-Monticello edged Southern Arkansas, 305-300, for the team title. The host UT Martin women finished third in the team standings with 240 points. EMCC's women had 25 points.
Leading the way for East Mississippi was reigning College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) participant Jace Harris, who paired with Southern Arkansas' Logan Graham to claim top honors in team roping. Harris, from Vilonia, Ark., and Graham nearly swept all three categories in the event by winning the short go with a 5.6-second clocking after finishing a close third in the opening round (6.1) for a first-place average (11.7).
EMCC's team roping tandem of Garner Holcomb (Pontotoc) and Morgan Mills (Winona) collected 90 individual points apiece for a fourth-place finish in the final standings after placing third with a second-round run of 7.2 seconds.
In other men's action, EMCC's Zack Varner (Greenville, Ala.) collected third-place honors in steer wrestling with a composite time of 10.6 seconds during his two runs. Teammate Dylan Bobo (Carthage) earned 30 individual points in steer wrestling with his 5.3-second performance in the opening round.
Fellow reigning CNFR participant Andrew Burks (Kiln) rounded out the Lions' team scoring this past weekend with a sixth-place finish in calf roping.
For the EMCC women, Taylor Vollin (Salinas, Calif.) and Suzanne Mosley (Pulaski) earned 20 and five points, respectively, in the goat tying event.
Coach Morgan Goodrich's East Mississippi rodeo teams will close out the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association's 2017-18 Ozark Region regular-season schedule this week (April 19-21) at the annual Ranger Rodeo, presented by Sycamore Bank and Northcentral Electric Power Association, in Senatobia. Beginning Thursday, the three-day event will be held at the Northwest Mississippi Community College Multipurpose Arena.
