EMCC Lions place seventh in fall-opening MACJC golf tourney at Eagle Ridge
The East Mississippi Community College men’s golf team improved 20 strokes over the weekend to finish in seventh place during the MACJC’s fall opener played at Eagle Ridge Golf Course on the Hinds Community College campus.
RAYMOND – The East Mississippi Community College men's golf team improved 20 strokes over the weekend to finish in seventh place during the MACJC's fall opener played at Eagle Ridge Golf Course on the Hinds Community College campus.
The Lions collectively carded a 307 during Sunday's second-round action to finish the season-opening tournament with a two-day total of 634. Mississippi Gulf Coast (285-280—565) overcame a five-shot, opening-round deficit to claim the team title by eight strokes over runner-up Meridian CC (280-293—573).
Freshmen Stone Tipton (Hamilton) and Coleman Suber (Calhoun City) jointly paced East Mississippi in their collegiate debuts with 154 totals to tie for 33rd place with three other golfers. Tipton improved a dozen strokes between days with a final-round, 1-under-par 71, while Suber put together rounds of 76 and 78.
Sophomore Eli Hemphill (Caledonia) followed with a two-day 157 (78-79) for the Lions to tie for 41st place. In his EMCC debut, New Hope High School product Dylan Cash also bettered his first-round score by 12 shots with a 79 on Sunday to finish tied for 56th. Sophomore Kayden Riding (Greenwood) rounded out EMCC's season-opening tournament scorecard with a 178 (90-88).
Gulf Coast's Jackson Wedgeworth claimed individual medalist honors with a two-shot victory over Isaiah Jackson of Meridian CC. Wedgeworth fired rounds of 66 and 68 to overtake Jackson, who owned a two-stroke lead following Saturday's tournament-best, 8-under-par 64.
Coach Benji Williams' EMCC Lions continue MACJC golf action this coming weekend (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) at Wolf Hollow Golf Course in Wesson. Set to begin Saturday, the two-day tournament will be hosted by Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
