East Mississippi freshman Hunter Harmon eyes final round of NJCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship

With an improved score for the second straight day, Hunter Harmon's third-round 76 puts the East Mississippi Community College freshman in a tie for 61st place heading into Friday's final round of the NJCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championship being held at Swan Lake Resort.

PLYMOUTH, Ind. – With an improved score for the second straight day, Hunter Harmon's third-round 76 puts the East Mississippi Community College freshman in a tie for 61st place heading into Friday's final round of the NJCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championship being held at Swan Lake Resort.  

A former prep standout at Calhoun Academy, Harmon is tied with two other golfers with his three-day total of 236 (83-77-76) on the 6,946-yard, par-72 Black Course layout.  The Vardaman native is the fifth Lion linkster in the past six years under EMCC head coach Dale Peay's guidance to compete in the NJCAA Championship.

Heading the 128-player leaderboard, Tanner McKinney (70-71-73—214), of Mineral (Mo.) Area College, owns a two-stroke edge over Tyler (Texas) Junior College's Charlie Cameron (79-70-67—216), who carded a 5-under-par 67 on Thursday to pull to even-par after three rounds.

Continuing to lead the quintet of individuals competing for Mississippi-based schools, Jones County's Patrick Dickson is tied for 50th place with a three-round score of 233 (79-78-76).  Two strokes behind in 59th place with identical composite totals of 235 are Hinds' Jordan Cole (82-76-77) and Ryan Desormeaux of Copiah-Lincoln (84-78-73).  East Central's Sawyer Williams sits tied for 70th at 239 (77-82-80).

Walters (Tenn.) State Community College (297-296-288—881), last year's NJCAA Division II national runner-up, fired an even-par 288 as a team during Thursday's third round to take a commanding 16-shot lead into Friday's final round.  Mesa (Ariz.) CC (298-297-302—897) and Owens (Ohio) Community College (298-297-307—902) are currently second and third, respectively, followed in fourth place by seven-time NJCAA Region 23 team champion Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (306-297-301—904) among the 20-team field.
