EMCC freshman forward Jahyde Gardiner tabbed MACJC Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Continuing to average a double-double on the season, East Mississippi Community College freshman forward Jahyde Gardiner has been named the MACJC Men's Basketball Player of the Week for his performances during last week's wins over Delgado and William Carey's junior varsity team.
SCOOBA – Continuing to average a double-double on the season, East Mississippi Community College freshman forward Jahyde Gardiner has been named the MACJC Men's Basketball Player of the Week for his performances during last week's wins over Delgado and William Carey's junior varsity team.
Originally from Philadelphia, Pa., Gardiner averaged 17.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 2.0 assists a week ago to help head coach Mark White's EMCC Lions improve to 6-1 on the season with a current four-game winning streak. In addition, Gardiner connected on 14-of-17 field goals (82%) during last week's victories.
Gardiner began the week by scoring a season-high 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting to go along with his eight rebounds and two blocks in the Lions' 71-68 road triumph over Delgado Community College on Dec. 8. Two days later, the 6-foot-6, 220-pounder recorded his fourth double-double in seven outings this season with 16 points (6-7 FGs), 11 rebounds, four blocks and three assists during EMCC's 77-66 home victory over William Carey University's JV squad.
For the season, Gardiner is scoring 12.9 points per contest on 53-percent accuracy from the field along with averaging a team-leading 10.1 rebounds and 2.1 blocked shots an outing.
A Pennsylvania product, Gardiner starred last season as a prep senior at The Potter's House Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Fla., after transferring from Freire Charter School in his native Philadelphia. Last year, Gardiner averaged 12.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game to earn honorable mention honors on the 2013-14 Florida Times-Union All-First Coast basketball team.
This week's MACJC Women's Basketball Player of the Week honor went to Aushiana Ivy, a sophomore forward from Northeast Mississippi Community College.
The EMCC men's basketball team returns to the court following the Christmas holiday by competing in the Tallahassee Democrat Holiday Classic, Dec. 30-31, on the campus of Tallahassee Community College in Florida. Set to be live video-streamed on www.EMCCAthletics.com/live, the Lions are slated to take on Hillsborough CC during first-day action (2 p.m.) followed by Garrett College on New Year's Eve day (1 p.m.).
