Bio

David Boykin is in his sixth year as East Mississippi Community College’s offensive coordinator on Buddy Stephens’ football coaching staff.

Boykin’s first two seasons back on the Scooba campus resulted in back-to-back national championships and consecutive conference titles that have increased EMCC’s football trophy count to five NJCAA championships and seven MACCC crowns since 2009.

Under Boykin’s offensive leadership during his first three seasons at EMCC, the Lions posted a collective overall record of 29-5 and annually ranked among the national team statistical leaders in scoring, total offense and passing offense. EMCC returned to national prominence a year ago by claiming a 10th MACCC North Division championship since 2008 and finishing the 2021 season with a 9-1 record and No. 6 national ranking. The 2021 Lions also featured the NJCAA’s fourth-ranked scoring offense.

Recent EMCC quarterbacks Jamari Jones (Mississippi Valley State), Damon Stewart (UAB) and Carlos Davis (Western Carolina) look to all compete at the university level in 2022. Several other former Lions offensive standouts under Boykin’s guidance are also still playing football at either the four-year level or professionally, including 2019 NJCAA All-American and current Southern Miss senior wide receiver Jason Brownlee as well as undrafted NFL free agent signees Dontario Drummond (Cowboys) and Kirk Merritt (Saints) by way of Ole Miss and Arkansas State, respectively.

A native of Noxubee County and an EMCC alumnus with more than two decades of coaching experience at some of the state’s most notable high school football programs, Boykin returned to EMCC in 2017 after spending the previous three seasons as the offensive coordinator at Starkville High School. The Yellowjackets compiled a three-year record of 34-6, including claiming the 2015 Class 6A state championship with a 14-1 mark after advancing to the state semifinals the year prior with a 13-1 record. In addition to ranking among the nation’s top 20 teams during those back-to-back seasons as district champions, the Jackets averaged 37.8 and 34.3 points per game in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

Prior to Starkville, Boykin enjoyed previous success during a four-year stint as offensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Louisville High School. Capped by an undefeated 2013 campaign in which the 16-0 Wildcats averaged nearly 40 points per contest en route to winning the Class 3A state title, Louisville went 46-12 between the 2010 and 2013 seasons.

Having gained valuable head coaching experience at Caledonia High School for three seasons (2006-07 & ’09), Boykin spent the 2008 campaign in the collegiate ranks coaching tight ends at the University of North Alabama.

Boykin’s initial coaching experience within the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) took place at Noxubee County High School. Beginning in 2003, the Tigers posted a three-year composite mark of 28-10 and advanced to the Class 4A state playoffs all three seasons.

Boykin kicked off his coaching career at Macon’s Central Academy first as an assistant coach before taking over head coaching duties in 2001.

During his initial stay on the Scooba campus, Boykin pitched for EMCC during the 1990 and 1991 baseball seasons. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State before completing his master’s degree in educational leadership from MUW.

Boykin is married to the former Nina Studdard, of Macon, and they have three children - daughters, Codye (Estes) and Connor, and son, Sy Hunter. They also have three grandchildren.
