EMCC withdraws from fall conference football play due to COVID-19 concerns

The East Mississippi Community College Department of Athletics, with the support of the EMCC Board of Trustees, individually elected not to participate in fall football should the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference begin league play Oct. 1 as previously announced. As a result, EMCC is currently withdrawing from league play for the fall 2020 season due to safety challenges created by the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Retired National Football League defensive end Brandon Deaderick and former Southeastern Louisiana University defensive back T’Darryl Grays have been hired as assistant football coaches at East Mississippi Community College, as announced Friday by 13th-year EMCC head football coach Buddy Stephens.

On the heels of claiming five NJCAA national championships and winning 87 percent of their games during the 2010s, the Lions of East Mississippi Community College are scheduled to kick off the new decade with an eight-game 2020 regular-season football slate comprised of four home games and four road contests.

For the second time in four years, East Mississippi Community College had a pair of players selected in the NFL Draft.  Former EMCC and Mississippi State teammates Tyre Phillips and Brian Cole II had their names called during this week’s three-day virtual professional football draft.

EMCC’s Jason Brownlee and Terence Cherry named NJCAA Football All-Americans

East Mississippi Community College sophomores Jason Brownlee and Terence Cherry have been named 2019 NJCAA Football All-Americans.  Products of West Point High School, Brownlee was named to the NJCAA’s first team while Cherry picked up second-team honors.  The selections were made by the NJCAA Football Committee and announced Tuesday by the NJCAA national office headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina.

East Mississippi Community College sophomores Jason Brownlee, Josh Smith and Terence Cherry have been named to the 2019 NJCAA All-Region 23 football team, as selected by the MACJC’s head football coaches and announced Thursday by MACJC Commissioner Steven Martin.

Headlined by NJCAA receptions and receiving yards leader Jason Brownlee, the East Mississippi Community College Lions have placed seven players on the MACJC’s 2019 all-conference football team.  The first and second teams of the MACJC’s North and South Divisions were selected by the conference’s head football coaches and announced Tuesday by MACJC Commissioner Steven Martin.

East Mississippi Community College’s three-year reign as state football champions came to an end with a 31-7 road setback to top-ranked and unbeaten Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College during Saturday night’s MACJC semifinals played at A.L. May Memorial Stadium.

Three-time reigning state champion EMCC set to begin title defense at No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast

Set to make their 11th MACJC football playoff appearance in 12 seasons under Coach Buddy Stephens’ guidance, the 13th-ranked and three-time reigning state champion Lions of East Mississippi Community College travel to Perkinston to begin their title defense by taking on the top-ranked and unbeaten Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs Saturday evening in the MACJC semifinals.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at A.L. May Memorial Stadium on the MGCCC campus.
