SCOOBA – Former Auburn All-SEC defensive lineman Jimmy Brumbaugh and offensive coaching veteran Scott Gasper have been hired as assistant coaches by head football coach Buddy Stephens of the 2011 NJCAA Champion Lions of East Mississippi Community College. The school's football staff additions have been approved by EMCC President Dr. Rick Young and EMCC Vice President/Director of Athletics Mickey Stokes.
Brumbaugh will serve as the Lions' defensive line coach as well as coordinating EMCC's strength and conditioning program. Gasper will take over quarterback coaching duties for East Mississippi, which has produced NJCAA All-Americans Bo Wallace (Ole Miss), Brad Henderson (Northwestern [La.] State) and Randall Mackey (Ole Miss) at the quarterback position over the last three years.
Brumbaugh takes over for Freddie Roach, who departed EMCC for an assistant coach's position at Murray State University. Gasper replaces A.J. Milwee, who joined the football coaching staff at the University of Akron following the Lions' 2011 national championship season.
Twice selected All-SEC for the Auburn Tigers from 1995 through 1999, Brumbaugh most recently served two-year coaching stints at Syracuse University (2010-11) and Louisiana Tech University (2008-09), where he played integral roles in the improvement of both programs' defensive line efforts. While involved with winning bowl teams at both schools, Brumbaugh helped mentor two-time All-BIG EAST Conference defensive end Chandler Jones at Syracuse as well as LTU's 2010 third-round NFL draft pick D'Anthony Smith.
Along with his extensive defensive coaching background, Brumbaugh previously spent two years (2006-07) as LSU's assistant strength and conditioning coordinator, where he served on the staff of the Tigers' 2007 National Championship football team. Following a five-year career in professional football competing in the XFL, Arena Football League and AF2, Brumbaugh's collegiate coaching career began with one-year stops at Tennessee-Chattanooga (2005) and Jacksonville State (2004). His professional playing career began in 2000 after signing a free agent contract with the NFL's San Francisco 49ers.
A former all-state defensive lineman at Keystone Heights (Fla.) High School, Brumbaugh made 291 career tackles, including 15 quarterback sacks, while starting 44 of 48 career games for the Auburn Tigers. After earning Freshman All-SEC honors in 1995, Brumbaugh made All-SEC Second Team as a sophomore and All-SEC First Team the following year after recording 80 and 78 tackles, respectively. However, his junior season ended prematurely after suffering a ruptured patella tendon against Georgia. After being granted a medical hardship in 1998 due to complications following the knee surgery, Brumbaugh received the Unsung Hero Award from the Chilton County Auburn Club in 1999 after starting 11 games during his comeback season.
With more than a decade's worth of coaching experience among the collegiate, high school and international ranks, Gasper spent the last four seasons coaching at the high school level. Last year, he served as offensive coordinator in charge of quarterbacks and wide receivers at Laurel High School in Maryland. Prior to that, Gasper spent the previous three seasons working in the same capacity at Knoxville Catholic High School in Tennessee, where he helped tutor two dozen all-district performers, including seven all-state players and two Mr. Football Award winners.
Gasper's most recent coaching experience at the collegiate level came during his five-year association with Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pa. Having played a key role in the formation of the school's football program, Gasper utilized his recruiting talents along with his status as the team's co-offensive coordinator to help turn a fledgling football program into second-round playoff participants at the NCAA Division II level in four years. Prior to SHU, Gasper benefitted from one-year coaching stops at Bethany College in West Virginia (2003), Galesburg (Ill.) High School (2002) and St. Joseph's College in Indiana (2001).
Recently elected to the Medina County (Ohio) Sports Hall of Fame following a standout career as a prep quarterback at Cloverleaf High School, Gasper further developed his quarterbacking skills and knowledge of the game as a four-year starter at West Virginia Wesleyan College. He earned first-team all-conference honors as a senior when he was the passing yards leader of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1998. Gasper held numerous school passing records and ranked among the NCAA Division II Top 10 career leaders in quarterback rating upon the conclusion of his playing career at WVWC.
